How to unlock a PDF with OnyxPDF
- Drop the password-protected PDF into the tool.
- Type the password that opens the file.
- Click “Unlock & Save”.
- Download the decrypted PDF.
Why do it in your browser instead of uploading?
- No upload: you are not sending a protected document — or its password — to a stranger’s server.
- Real decryption by qpdf, not a screenshot-and-rebuild trick: pages, text and metadata are preserved.
- Free and instant, with no task caps.
- The natural partner to Protect PDF: lock and unlock your own files on one site, all locally.
Good to know (honest limits)
- You must know the password. This tool does not crack or guess passwords — a forgotten password means the file stays locked, which is the point of encryption.
- Files protected with only an owner password (permissions) behave according to their flags; entering the owner password removes everything.
Frequently asked questions
Can this unlock a PDF if I forgot the password?
No. Unlocking requires the correct password. Password recovery or cracking is not something this tool does — encryption would be meaningless if it were.
Will unlocking change my document?
No. The decrypted copy preserves pages, text, images and metadata; only the encryption wrapper is removed.
Is it legal to unlock a PDF?
Unlocking files you own or are authorised to modify is a normal, legitimate task (for example, your own bank statements). Do not use it on documents you have no right to alter.
Is my password or file sent anywhere?
Neither. Both stay in your browser; the decryption runs as WebAssembly on your device.
